Cork Handle extension - EVERGREEN

A heavy poundage rod with a short handle really will irk the angler when not able to control the rod when fighting a 'big' fish. Some prefer not to use it anymore and just put it aside as it is troublesome to get the butt extended.

Recently I have this butt extension project for a 8-20 pounder rod with a full cork handle.  Need to extend 3 1/2". 

This is the original condition and length of the rod.

One section of the cork ring have to be sacrificed in order to remove the butt cap. 

After the butt cap was removed, insertion of the extended blank are done.
Then the cork rings are stacked and glued to the blank.

After 24 hours, the cork handle was lathed carefully  so that the shape of the new cork handle matches the old handle. This will give a seamless joint between the old and new handle.

The holes are then patched before the handle is coated with the cork seal.
Last, to glue the butt cap back to position.

Just the HANDLES

Nothing much happening in the month of April 2015, just the reconfiguration of the MEGABASS rod and building up 2 rod handles.

The 2 heavy heavy blanks and the required components are flown in from Miri, Sarawak.

Building up a cork grip for a big rod is not as simple for fly rods or normal fishing rods although the procedures of making the cork handle were meant to be same.

This is the only photo of the rod which I just manage take before it was wrapped up for shipment.

REWORK....

These was sent to Miri and then was return to me for rework. The handle was too thick and needed to 'slim' down....

Messy ...messy .... work...

Don't really like to do rework. Normally I would be as precise as possible, but at time when the customer gave the dimensions , I assumed they know what the wanted...

The gimbal have to be remove in order to have a more horizontal plane to sand down the cork grip.

One done and one more to go ..

Operation Sanding down done.. next is to fix the gimbal and finish of with a layer of cork seal.

                                                   

Patching up bored cork rings

I stopped by the hardware shop the other day to get a hole puncher for the job. A few cork rings was "sacrificed" for project.

Using the hole puncher, I punched holes on the cork rings to make the cork plugs to seal up the bore. Here's how the process look like..

I used TB III to glue the cork plug to the ring. A dab of TBIII at the hole and push the cork plug in.

My patched cork rings are ready for its' next process.
